1st heat Saturday on the mile course. Garland Privitts record in the P-111 was up for grabs. P-9 and P-66 were challenging the clock and lost, they jumped the gun, Dwights speed was with in 5 seconds of the record.
Nothing spectacular unfolded,P- 66 and P-9 were out front and penalized, then P-111, P-28/P-200 were racing for approximately 4 laps when the P-200 was able to break free, P-75 was next. The official finish order was P-111, P-200, P-28, P-75, P-66 and P-9.
Heat 2 P-66 was much closer at the start and took off. But wind conditions were not favorable for a record run. 10 seconds behind the record. The running order was P-66, P-9, P-111, P-200, P-28 and P-75 DNF. P-9 was battling oil blow by each heat, I guess it made it hard to hold on to things in the boat. P-75 shaft started walking again and he packed up to go home and get an early start on the repair.
Saturday night P-28 discovered a slight water problem. When the motor was fired up to set the timing. A bazooka style flume of water gushed out of the right header. An evaluation revealed that a head gasket failed. P-28 was done for the day.
Sunday
4 teams left, P-9, P-66, P-111and P-200. They all were ready to go, P-200 did have a crack in the shaft collar and was still going to go out and make the field and just tool around the course. The gun was sounded a full 4 minutes. Then at the 1 minute only 3 of the 4 were running on the course. The P-200 could not get it fired. P-66, P-9 and P-111 were the finished order. The P-200 was able to start up once on the trailer. The teams not wanting to take any chances chose to scratch for the day and got an early start home.
